Bad Candy is a short film from team Canned Monkey and Friends, a subdivision of Cymbal Monkey Theater and Fat Free Features. It was made for the Inland Northwest 50 Hour Slam 2013. Required elements were to include a book as a prop, use a Spokane public library as a location, base the film on an award winning short story (in this case, "The Bus Ride"), and as an additional requirement for this team only, every character seen must hold food at some point.
Bad Candy tells the tale of an unlucky man who must face a personal injustice in repetition. It stars Ron Ford, Chris Peterson, Brad Picard, Erin Meenach, Charlotte Meenach, and Richard F. Lee. It was written by Ron Ford, based on ideas given by the team. Tom Steeber directed and edited the film. Tom is also responsible for the titles and artwork.
The sets for Bad Candy were created in the garage owned by team member, Brad Picard. Set dressings provided by Mo Noder made it possible to construct a convincing prison cell and adjoining room. The bars you see above were only about three square feet in their entirety, yet it was shot in such a way that this is not apparent. There are a number of small nods to the story that it was based upon, including shots of snow falling outside a window.
Bad Candy is a part of the 50 Hour Slam and will air on Spokane's Community Minded Television starting in May of 2013.
